Do Poodles have hair or fur? Why are their whiskers so curly? And what is that extra claw on their leg?
When you look past the fancy haircut, the Poodle is a biological marvel built for one purpose: water retrieval. Every quirk of their anatomy—from their webbed feet to their curly coats—serves a function.

What Will You Learn? 👇
1. The Coat: Hair vs. Fur
The Big Question: Do Poodles have hair or fur?
Poodles have hair.
While “fur” and “hair” are chemically the same (keratin), the difference lies in the growth cycle.
- Fur (Double Coat): Grows to a specific length and sheds seasonally (like a Husky).
- Hair (Single Coat): Grows continuously (like human hair) and does not shed seasonally.
Why This Matters:
Because it never stops growing, a Poodle’s hair will eventually mat and cord if not brushed. You are trading “shedding” for “grooming bills.”
- The “Curly” Gene: The Poodle’s tight curls are designed to trap warm air against the body and repel water, acting like a wetsuit for hunting in freezing lakes.
2. The Face: Whiskers & Eyelashes
Do Poodles Have Whiskers?
Yes. All Poodles are born with whiskers (vibrissae) on their muzzle, chin, and above their eyes.
- Function: Whiskers are sensory organs that help dogs “feel” air currents and objects in the dark.
- Why You Don’t See Them: In the Poodle world, it is standard practice to shave the face clean. This shaves off the whiskers.
- Does Shaving Hurt? No. It’s like cutting your fingernails. However, the dog loses some sensory input. Many pet owners choose to leave the “mustache” (Teddy Bear Cut) to keep the whiskers intact.
Poodle Eyelashes
Poodles are famous for their incredibly long eyelashes.
- The Science: Like their coat, their eyelashes have a longer growth cycle than other breeds.
- Grooming Tip: You must trim them. If left unchecked, they can grow so long they curl back into the eye, causing irritation or corneal ulcers.
3. The Nose: Colors & “Winter Nose”
A Poodle’s nose color is determined by their genetic color family.
- Black/Blue/Silver/White Poodles: Must have Black noses.
- Brown/Cafe/Silver Beige Poodles: Must have Liver (Brown) noses.
- Apricot/Cream/Red: usually have Black noses, but some have Liver.
Why is my Poodle’s nose turning pink?
If your Poodle had a black nose in summer and a pinkish nose in winter, they have “Snow Nose” (Hypopigmentation).
- Cause: The enzyme tyrosinase, which produces pigment, is temperature-sensitive. In cold weather, it works less effectively, causing the nose to fade.
- Is it bad? No. The color usually returns in summer.
4. The Feet: Dewclaws & Webbing
Do Poodles Have Dewclaws?
Yes. The dewclaw is the “thumb” located on the inner wrist.
- To Remove or Not?
- US Standards: Many breeders remove dewclaws at 3 days old to create a cleaner look for the show ring and prevent tearing in the field.
- European Standards: Removing dewclaws is illegal in many countries.
- Safety Warning: If your Poodle has dewclaws, do not forget to trim them! Because they don’t touch the ground, they don’t wear down. A curved dewclaw can grow right into the skin.
Are Poodle Feet Webbed?
Yes. Poodles have more significant webbing between their toes than most breeds.
- Why? Remember, they are Water Retrievers. That webbing acts like a flipper, helping them swim efficiently to catch ducks.
5. Summary: The Poodle “Cheat Sheet”
| Body Part | Trait | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Coat | Single-layer Hair | Water repellent, low shedding. |
| Whiskers | Yes (Curly) | Sensory input (often shaved off). |
| Feet | Webbed | Swimming efficiency. |
| Ears | Drop (Hanging) | Protects ear canal from water (prone to infection). |
| Tail | High Set | Acts as a “flag” for hunters to see the dog in tall grass. |
Quick FAQ
Why does my Poodle have hair in their ears?
Poodles grow hair inside the ear canal. This traps moisture and wax, leading to infections.
- Care: You must “pluck” or trim this ear hair regularly to allow airflow.
Do Poodles have a double coat?
No. They have a single coat. This is why they get cold easily in winter and often need sweaters, unlike a Golden Retriever.
Why is my Poodle’s skin spotted?
If you shave a white or light-colored Poodle, you might see dark spots on the skin. This is normal pigment (like freckles) and often matches their “Parti” gene, even if the coat is solid white!
