How to vet a poodle breeder

A directory is only a starting point. Whatever list you use, these checks are what separate a careful breeder from a careless one.

  • See the parents in person and ask to see their health-testing results. OFA and CHIC records for hips and eyes (plus cardiac and thyroid for standard poodles) should be readily available, not something you have to chase.
  • Meet the mother and look at where the litter is raised. Puppies should be socialised inside a home and handled daily, not kept alone in a kennel run or outdoors.
  • Get everything in writing: the health guarantee, the vaccination and deworming schedule, the pedigree, and what the breeder will do if a genetic condition appears later.
  • Expect the breeder to interview you as well. They should ask about your home, your experience with dogs, and how you plan to live with a poodle before they take any deposit.
  • Treat these as red flags: many litters available at once, parents you are never allowed to meet, no health testing at all, and pressure to pay a deposit right away.
