What is an Airedoodle?

Do you love Terriers and Poodles? If so, then you’ll adore the Airedoodle. This magnificent crossbreed is a combination of the Airedale Terrier and the Poodle. 

Its Poodle parent originated from Germany and was known to hunt and retrieve waterfowl, i.e., ducks and birds. Whereas the Airedale Terrier comes from Yorkshire, England. The purpose of this breed was to hunt also.

What does an Airedoodle look like?

Unlike its Poodle parent, the Airedoodle is quite large and can weigh between 40-50lbs/18-22kg. Similarly, it can grow up to 22-27inches / 55-68cm in height, similar to the Dalmadoodle. That’s a big doodle!

Alongside its large height, the Airedoodle is renowned for its square build and having a muscular, sturdy yet strong structure with long limbs. It also has a wide yet long brown muzzle and small spaced-out eyes, which gives them a serious demeanor. Plus, the Airedoodle is renowned for having triangular, floppy ears that droop down the side of its face, similar to its parents. They also have a medium-length tail that sometimes curls towards their back.

The coat of an Airedoodle tends to be medium to long length, and depending on which parent it takes after, it will either have a long and wiry coat like the Airedale Terrier or a soft, smooth curly coat like the Poodle.

Regarding its coat, it can come in a variety of colors from brindle, blue, black, tan, and several of these combinations. Most Airedoodles coats look similar to an Airedale Terrier.

Are they hypoallergenic?

One of the most important factors of buying any dog can be their shedding qualities. If you’re someone who suffers from lots of allergies, then I bet you’re eager to know if an Airedoodle is hypoallergenic or not. Luckily for you, both of its parents don’t shed that much, and this means an Airedoodle does not either. However, at some point, note that this breed, if there are underlying health conditions or anything else, sometimes may shed more frequently.

Airedoodle Grooming requirements 

Depending on which type of coat this breed inherits can influence the grooming requirements. Most of the time, the maintenance is more than average. If it takes after the Airedale Terrier, it will need to be brushed twice a week and have its coat shaped. 

If it has more of a Poodle coat, it will need to be brushed, trimmed, and washed every couple of months. You may wish to take it to a professional groomer to have a fancy haircut that matches its coat. If you don’t take them for regular grooming or look after their coat, their skin could become knotted and tangled easily. 

Ideally, you should brush an Airedoodle’s teeth every death to prevent any gum disease and dental problems. Similarly, you should trim every couple of weeks or when you notice their nails getting too long. Often a good indicator of this is when you hear their nail click against the floor, making a clicking sound. 

Airedoodle Temperament and personality

Due to its parent’s nature, the Airedoodle is highly energetic and must have regular exercise to keep it stimulated. Similarly, it’s a dog that’s best suited to having a home with a yard because of its size. It requires lots of exercise, and when you’re not out taking it on walks, it will need a space to play.

Plus, its friendly nature makes it a great people-orientated dog and will easily display signs of cheerfulness and affection to many individuals. This also applies to family members; they love everyone and anyone, making them a great bonding partner for seniors and children. You shouldn’t have a problem bringing an Airedoodle into your home. This also applies to other pets, like cats in your home; they will get along well with them also.

However, don’t take this personality for granted and expect them to fit in immediately. In order for the Airedoodle to bond well, they must be socialized from an early age! If you do this, they will have no problem bonding to other animals in your home or making friends with other dogs, even out on walks!

If you’re an outgoing person and you like to be outside the house all the time with your family, then make sure you take an Airedoodle with you! Otherwise, if you leave them at home on their own for long periods of time, they may quickly develop separation anxiety. When this happens, they may cry, boredom chew on furniture and develop self-destructive behaviors, which is the last thing you’ll want as a dog owner!

Due to their intelligent nature, they’re a crossbreed that’s easy to train.

They always are eager to please their owner, which means they respond to commands quickly and easily. With the Airedoodle, you will have a dog that’s house trained in no time!

Exercise requirements

In the last section, I did mention that the Airedoodle is a hyperactive dog. Because they’re large dogs, they need at least one hour of exercise a day, and you should be able to handle them. What I mean by this is that they are heavy and muscular; therefore, you need to be strong enough to hold a leash while they pull. 

They also love other games like fetch, tug of war, and love to run. But be considerate with this breed; just because it has a large size does not mean it can manage large periods of exercise on its own. 

Equally as important as physical exercise is their mental exercise. Due to both parents being highly intelligent, this breed needs frequent mental stimulation. Typical examples of this are police work, hunting, guarding, tracking, and competitive obedience. 

What to feed an Airedoodle?

When it comes to feeding an Airedoodle, there’s not a set formula or feeding requirement for it. Most of the time, veterinarians recommend a high-quality dog food that’s grain-free and that contains a good level of protein or a raw diet. This breed can easily suffer from obesity if overfed and not fed the right type of food. 

Therefore to get a good idea, it might be better to speak to a veterinarian so they can recommend the right type of dog food to feed it based on its age, weight, and health problems. 

Normally though, an Airedoodle has 2-3.5 cups of food a day based on its high energy levels. Also, make sure you avoid foods that have any fillers or byproducts, even if it can be tempting to buy if they’re cheaper.

Health problems

On average, an Airedoodle can live up to 10-15 years. However, depending on how they’re raised and looked after can influence their lifespan. Similarly, they are prone to face certain health problems, which are:

• Hip dysplasia: A strain caused by additional weight placed on an Airedoodle’s joints. Most of the time, their hip bone does not rest properly into the socket, causing mobility issues and pain. 

• Obesity: As mentioned earlier, Airedoodle’s can easily get obese. To avoid them getting fat, they should be exercised regularly. Otherwise, they could be at risk of developing life-threatening conditions. 

• Cataracts: This is when their photoreceptor lens clouds over their eyes, causing sight problems and can later lead to blindness.

• Von Willebrands disease: This is a genetic disorder that causes an Airedoodles blood to not clot properly. As a result, it can cause spontaneous nosebleeds, bleeding internally, blood in feces, and more. 

• Hypothyroidism: When their thyroid is underactive, causing them to gain weight, become lethargic, and have dark pigmentation. 

• Gastric torsion bloat: As an Airedoodle is a large dog, it can easily get bloated. This means their stomach can fill up with excess gas, food, and fluid, causing them trouble breathing. 

It’s important to know that an Airedoodle may not get any of these health problems above, but there is a risk. To eliminate any of these, you should take them to a vet every year for a regular check-up who can rule out anything before it gets serious.

How much does an Airedoodle puppy cost?

Out of many designer dog breeds that exist, an Airedoodle is often one of the costliest due to its rarity. If you’re looking to buy one, you can expect to pay a minimum of $1000 and upwards in the USA. However, that price may be even more based on where you’re located, the breeder’s reputation, and their parent’s line.

Overall, an Airedoodle is a lively and easy-going breed. If you have other family members or pets in your home, this dog will get along great if socialized. Be warned, it’s a big crossbreed, though, and requires regular exercise. 

Plus, it has an athletic structure which is why you should use a strong leash when taking it out on walks. You will also want to be able to pull it in if it gets out of the way. Both of its parents are also highly intelligent, which means the Airedoodle requires a lot of mental stimulation. There are great games you can play, such as fetch, hunting games, and guarding games.
