Have you ever seen a dog with such unique markings that you just had to do a double take? My first experience with a parti poodle was exactly that. As I walked by this poodle in the park, I did a double take at its patches of black fur scattered across light skin. There was something so striking yet beautiful about its one-of-a-kind coat.
This embodies what makes the parti poodle such a fascinating breed. Its adorable appearance sparkles with charm and expression thanks to its non-standard coloring. But beyond looks, these dogs have incredible kindness, intelligence and loyalty that extends to all family members. They are funny, mischievous companions always ready to play.

A parti poodle has white as the primary coat color (≥50%). Secondary shades include black, brown, silver, red, blue, apricot, cream. Though poodles exhibit diverse colors, parti patterns uniquely stand out.
Distinguishing traits include clean lines separating the white base from secondary shades, which appear in irregular large patches anywhere. No two parti poodles share identical spot placement, comparable to unique human fingerprints. Final shadings emerge fully as puppies mature.
What are the Basic Types of Parti Poodles?
Here are the 3 recognized varieties of Parti Poodles:
Standard Parti Poodles:
Height: 20-23 inches. Weight: 45-80 lbs. Lifespan: 15-18 years.
Often called Royal Poodles, they are attentive, poised and agile. Easy to train and get along well with children and other dogs. Self-sufficient yet show qualities like vigilance to protect owners when needed. Suitable for apartments but require activity and training. Popular in dog shows where they often win “Best in Show.”
Miniature Parti Poodles:
Height: 11-15 inches. Weight: 14-18 lbs. Lifespan: 14-16 years.
These mid-sized poodles make great family pets. Quick-witted, easy to train and playful, they are not aggressive. However, lack of attention can cause depression or jealousy. Despite small size, they are hardy and perform well in agility competitions due to speed and agility.
Toy Parti Poodles:
Height: 8-10 inches. Weight: 6-9 lbs. Lifespan: 12-15 years.
One of the most popular companion breeds, they are highly intelligent and confident. Behave like standard poodles despite small size. Proud and may defend or bite if displeased. Desire to please owners so are sociable and adjustable. Surprise in obedience and agility despite tiny size, being among smartest breeds.
What is the Parti Poodle Temperament Like?
The Parti Poodle is a very friendly and outgoing breed. They love to meet new people and are always up for a game of fetch. They are also very intelligent and easily trained. Parti Poodles make great family pets as they are good with children and other animals.
What Grooming Needs do Parti Poodles Have?
Regular grooming is essential for the Parti Poodle’s health and appearance. Start acclimating puppies to handling from a young age. Find a patient groomer experienced with Poodles.
Slicker brushes and metal combs are your main tools. Start at the ends and brush upwards in the direction of fur growth to avoid snags and pulls. Work in sections and be gentle around the face and paws.
To remove tangles, use a slicker brush and start at ends, working upward with gentle strokes. For matted areas, spray on conditioner before carefully brushing piece by piece to avoid tugging skin.
Use a tear stain remover or diluted white vinegar on facial hair daily to prevent stains from collecting. Fingernail trims are needed weekly to avoid breaking. Bathe only when dirty to protect the skin’s natural oils.
Be patient as you practice grooming routines together. With regular care, your Parti Poodle’s coat will shine and skin remain healthy for years of low-maintenance handsome looks. Don’t hesitate to consult a pro if you have any questions.
Are parti poodles hypoallergenic?
Hypoallergenic dogs don’t cause any allergic reaction in humans. Since parti poodles have a non-shedding coat, we can say with confidence that yes, parti poodles are hypoallergenic.
What Is the Difference Between a Parti Poodle and a Phantom Poodle?
It’s not easy to distinguish these two poodle coats. Both of their coats have two colors. The Phantom poodle has a solid color coat with the secondary color covering bits of the chest, legs, and sometimes eyebrows. Carefully choose your puppy based on breeder reputation and the puppy’s health, temperament and traits. Visit potential litters and consider these tips:
- What health screenings have been performed on the parents (hips, eyes, heart)? Ask to see documented OFA certifications.
- Are the parents’ temperaments suitable for your lifestyle? Are they from working or show lines?
- How socialized are the puppies? Look for friendly, confident puppies that are comfortable being handled.
- What is the puppy’s birth date and health history? Ensure they are at least 8 weeks old before adopting.
- How do the breeder’s facility and practices ensure puppy health and socialization?
- Can you rehome the puppy with the breeder if needed in future?
- What is included (vet records, food samples, microchip)? A pedigree is preferred.
Select a playful, curious pup. Examine eyes and coat for any issues. Check tail/anal area is clean. Puppies should be 2-4 months old depending on your goals. An ethical breeder aims to professionally match puppies with owners for a successful partnership.
Training and Socializing Your Parti Pup
Parti Poodles are highly intelligent and want to please their owners. Start training between 8-16 weeks using positive reinforcement like praise and treats.
Socialize your puppy as much as possible – take them places in a bag or stroller. Invite trusted friends over to practice polite greetings. Puppy kindergarten classes can also help with social skills once vaccinated.
Keep training sessions short, 5-10 minutes, and end on a positive note. Consistency is key – use the same commands each time. Poodles thrive on mental stimulation, so make learning fun with their kibble as rewards.
With attention to early socialization and positive training, your Parti Poodle will grow into a well-adjusted companion for years to come. Their eagerness to learn makes them a joy to train.

MY standard poodle is blue mearle. Is she considered a partipoodle?
Hi Gisela,
A parti poodle is a poodle with a coat that is at least 50% white with any other color, while a blue merle poodle has a predominantly blue coat with irregular patches of black. Even though your poodle may have a unique and beautiful coat, she is not considered a parti poodle unless she has the distinct parti pattern.
However, that doesn’t take away from the fact that your blue merle standard poodle is absolutely stunning! Blue merle is a relatively rare color in poodles, and it can add an interesting twist to the classic poodle look. I’m sure she’s a fantastic companion and a joy to be around.
I hope that answers your question. Please feel free to ask me anything else you might be curious about.
